The author, Mary Johnston of Virginia, was a best selling novelist in the first third of the Twentieth century. She wrote historical novels, some with a romance angle. Movies were made of some of her books including TO HAVE AND TO HOLD. She used her fame to advance women's rights. As might be expected, 1492 is a novel of Columbus, his voyages, discoveries, trials, triumphs, his fall from favor in the Spanish court and his death. The novel also reveals the greed and harshness of the Spanish toward the Indians and each other. Ms. Johnston does not deny the greatness of Columbus or the ill treatment of the Indians by the Spanish. In this novel, Columbus wants to trade for gold and other things but many of the Spanish just take what they want. Johnston's writing style is unusual but grows on the reader. 1492 Mary 9781444413564 Books Reviews
Well, I read 1491 and 1493, so I naturally assumed that 1492 would be in the same vain. It has nothing to do with Columbus as far as I could tell. I have to admit I didn't finish reading it, as it appeared to be fictional, and I was expecting non-fiction. This is not really a fair review since I didn't finish reading it.
This book is about the voyages of Christopher Columbus as reported by a man who, according to this account, sailed with him. Interesting book. It was a good read.
Written from the viewpoint of an educated common man traveling with Columbus. The role played by politics in the early Caribbean is presented as the major player.
